Celebrating the Tyre Industry's Male Role Models on International Men's Day
Celebrating Male Role Models in the Tyre Industry on International Men's Day

This week the UK celebrates International Men’s Day.

Despite some exciting initiatives lead by some of the largest employers, the British tyre industry still remains dominated by men who now make up 83% of the UK’s motor vehicle industry. You might then ask, ‘Do men in the tyre industry need celebrating?’ The short answer is yes.

The mental health statistics for men are not stacked in their favour. Men make up three in every four suicides and 85% of rough sleepers. COVID has hit men harder too, with more than double the covid mortality rate compared to women.

In a year where we’ve been asking others to #BeKind, it seems more than reasonable to spend 24 hours focussing on supporting and improving men’s health and wellbeing. It seems fitting on International Men’s day to shine a light on the positive male role models in our hardworking industry - every day men who are living decent, honest lives and making positive contributions to our wider society.

We’ve been spoilt for choice, but we’re pleased to introduce 5 of UK’s tyre industry’s finest male role models, demonstrating their contribution to society on International Men’s Day 2021:

John Kingman, Group Tyre.

As the IT Manager at Group Tyre Wholesale – one of the UK’s biggest tyre wholesalers, John Kingman’s expertise ensures the IT driving the firm’s tyre logistics is always running smoothly. So when John looked for a sporting endeavour to fundraise for Diabetes UK, a charity that supported his late father, it seemed fitting tyres were involved!

“Undertaking three 100 mile bike races in 12 months was a real challenge, but fundraising in memory of my Dad has kept me focussed and motivated.”

“When you push yourself, it’s amazing what you can achieve and I hope I am setting that example to my daughter in memory of her grandad.”

John completed the Prudential Ride London 100 for 2 consecutive years, adding in the Velo Birmingham and Midlands 100 mile ride for good measure in between. Kingman’s sporting tribute to his father raised a huge £3000 for Diabetes UK, British Heart Foundation and Alzheimer’s Society.

Dan Zelos. We Sell Tyres.

As the 2021 MINI Challenge champion you’d be forgiven for thinking that Dan Zelos spent his off track time leisurely. But behind the glamourous racing profile is an ambitious grafter that is helping young warehouse operatives successfully make their transition from education into the workplace.

“By day I am the Operations Manager at We Sell Tyres and I manage 50+ staff across a group of tyre wholesale depots. For some of the team, this is their first real job. It’s part of my job to develop them and help them make that transition from education to employment.”

“In reality running tyre depots is no different to running a race team. It’s all about the team work and empowering every member of the team to appreciate and utilise their unique skills.”

Liam Williams. ETB

Sometimes being a role model is about having an ambition and chasing that dream. ETB’s tyre technician Liam Williams definitely sets that standard. From a young age Liam knew he wanted to work with cars, an ambition that was crystalized when his dad attempted to scrap a car that he wanted to repair. Now working his “dream job”, Liam’s enthusiasm remains and is evident in his huge tyre knowledge.

“The technology behind tyres has evolved so much, too. The compounds, tread patterns and wet-braking performance characteristics have advanced so much, not to mention noise, dry handling and the arrival of EV products.”

Liam’s customers at ETB Malvern clearly benefit from his passion and expertise.

“I love to chat to people. I get a lot of satisfaction from my job in that regard. Sharing my tyre knowhow can help my customers make a more informed decision.”

Seb Dorr, Sunnyside Garage.

Currently undertaking his level 3 mechanic apprenticeship, Seb is one quarter of the mechanics team at Sunnyside Garage. At work full time as well as attending college 1 day a week, Seb is described by his fellow mechanics as “eager to learn” and “hard working.” But his enthusiasm for vehicle maintenance and safety doesn’t stop at work.

“It started with my grandad. He lives in sheltered accommodation. Originally I went round to help him with his routine tyre safety checks. But I’ve now got a little group of regulars who all need a little help with their regular car safety checks that get a bit trickier as you get older.”

Dave Jones, CAM

Monday to Friday, Dave Jones is a Technical Delivery Consultant at CAM, specialising in the tyre retail sector. At the weekend, Dave volunteers as the manager and coach for the Seneley and Garswood Juniors Under 10’s!

“It started 3 years ago when my daughter joined the Warrington Junior Football League Under 7’s. I took up a coaching position which led me to gaining my Level 1 FA coaching qualification. I’ve worked with that same group of young players ever since.“

“My role as a coach is all about modelling the behaviour I expect and want to develop in our young players. Teaching them about sportsmanship, instilling into them it’s about participation and effort. Winning isn’t everything, but 100% effort and positive attitude is.”

Seneley and Garswood Juniors Under 10’s are sponsored by CAM as a part of our Match Me promise to our staff. We match their time spent volunteering and the money raise fundraising for charities that are important to them.

26 Commercial Tyre Service Providers Integrated with Bridgestone via Fleetbridge & CAM's TiDaex™

A total of 26 commercial tyre service providers are now live and benefitting from the successful integration between CAM International’s TiDaeX™ and Bridgestone’s FleetBridge system.

Leveraging the employment of e-jobsheet to connect directly with FleetBridge to secure greater shared data accuracy and efficiency between connected dealers and Bridgestone Europe, the systemised link makes it easier to do business with the global tyre manufacturer, by markedly reducing the dealers’ admin workload where Bridgestone fleet work is concerned.

When work is conducted by the commercial tyre dealers on a Bridgestone fleet vehicle, the direct connection between e-jobsheet and Bridgestone’s FleetBridge system will enable job data to be passed automatically from the tablet, including a copy of the job card and any photos and signatures provided, to be populated into the FleetBridge system within seconds of job completion from a fitter’s tablet. Inspection data will also be transmitted automatically to Bridgestone.

Sion Rathkey, Solution Business Back Office manager, Bridgestone Europe, says, “Some years ago we set out to become the easiest manufacturer for tyre service dealers in the UK to do business with. The success of the TiDaeX™ integration into FleetBridge for e-jobsheet has certainly contributed to that goal. The integration provides clear and real time information which has improved the quality of data provided to the end user.”

Steve Daly of CAM adds, “Our successful long-term collaboration with Bridgestone Europe is achieved through a deep and purposeful system integration between TiDaeX™ and FleetBridge, unlocking genuine efficiencies for both the network service provider and Bridgestone. This direct connectivity delivered by our e-jobsheet tablet technology can enhance the dealers’ customer service while at the same time saving them time, admin headache and costs.”

Magowan’s “Pioneering” Paperless Tyre Warehouse  - Powered by CAM’s Warehouse Management Software

Last month Tyres & Accessories editor, Chris Anthony visited the brand new 120,000 sq foot Magowan’s Tyre warehouse in Northern Ireland. The largest tyre warehouse on the island of Ireland, the warehouse and its stock are powered by CAM’s new Warehouse Management Software (WMS), an extension to the popular CAMEO software. It is this combination of Magowan’s warehouse and CAM’s software that Anthony described as “pioneering”.

In the latest edition (October 2021) of Tyres & Accessories magazine, Anthony is quick to identify the “huge efficiency benefits after consolidating its warehousing into a central location and throwing out paper monitoring forms and physical stock takes in favour of increasingly automated warehouse and CAMEO WMS.”

In his interview with Magowan’s founder, Darryl Magowan Snr, we learn that going paperless has "improved the business immeasurably", with "fewer mistakes" and with day-to-day operations running "more efficiently".

So what’s driving these new found efficiencies? Aside from the seriously impressive £10.5 million state-of-the art tyre warehouse, the efficiencies are driven by automation. CAM’s Warehouse Management software uniquely identifies every tyre, aisle, rack and even the stillages, all thanks to RFID and bar code scanning technology built into WMS. At Magowan’s even the specialist forklift pickers are integrated into the automated tyre warehouse management experience that WMS delivers.

It is this unique tyre warehouse connectivity that the Tyre & Accessories editor explains as “every warehouse operator (and the system itself) has immediate access to the content of any stillage in any location at the touch of a button via a tablet device. Supervisors too, can locate any tyre or stillage anywhere in the warehouse via a click of a mouse with the CAM WMS System.”

Over the course of full three page article, Tyres & Accessories editor, Chris Anthony explores and details many of the efficiencies that the Magowan’s paperless warehouse is now demonstrating:

Huge Operational Efficiencies

“Before the current project was completed, Magowan’s warehouse team could unload three to four containers in a day. Now the range is seven to eight (& nine at a push) thanks to modern design, machinery and software helping to manage it all. Multiply that figure across a year and the efficiency savings are significant to say the least.“

Stock Efficiencies

“Since the intelligent system knows the intimate details of each tyre logged in the software - including its DOT code - the Magowan's team are able to ensure that the warehouse works to first-in first-out principles and that stock is kept as "fresh" as possible.”

Quality Control

“But knowing such details also brings other strategic benefits. For example, should a manufacturer recall a certain make and model, identifying which tyres need to go back to the factory is far easier than it ever was before.”

Reduced Staffing Costs

“A new normal with a 20 per cent reduction in headcount that means not just fewer staff, but also the most experienced and efficient staff remain. The impact on the working week provides another illustration of increased efficiencies. Before the warehouse(s) ran from 6:30 to 17:30 Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend work on top of this. Now the new warehouse runs 8:00 to 17:00, five days a week.”

Improvements in Customer Satisfaction

“The fact that considerably fewer credit notes are issued for the accidental mis-picking of slightly incorrect tyres.”
